Butcher Box: Because Quality Matters

Sometime last week I shared a photo on Instagram of my monthly subscription box from Butcher Box. That post peaked some interested and I thought I would share a little bit about what Butcher Box is, and why I love it.

What is Butcher Box?

Butcher Box is a monthly subscription box that offers high quality meat to your front door. You can choose from two different size boxes, and you have the option to either customize your box items, or pick from the mixed box options (ex, beef and chicken box or all beef box) where Butcher Box chooses what is sent each month. In addition to your box items, you have a variety of “add-ons” you can select to throw in there as well (ex. bacon and/or pre-formed burger patties)

The smaller box starts at $149 and the larger box starts at $270. This may seem like a lot of money but I believe you get what you pay for.

Why Butcher Box?

So, why Butcher Box? Well, if you are like me, and hate supporting the [disgusting] factory farm industry, Butcher Box is a great option! Many of us do not have the luxury of getting to know a local butcher and/or farmer to have the knowledge of where are meat comes from and if they were raised humanely. Butcher Box only offers humanely raised meat! This means animals are pasture raised, grass fed, no antibiotics, you know, all that good stuff! And you can honestly taste the difference in there product than one you get from the grocery store.

If you are unaware of the horrible conditions of factories farms, I would suggest doing a little research. There are plenty of articles and even some documentaries on Netflix that shed some light on this subject. If you didn’t think Butcher Box was worth it before, you may think twice after educating yourself (or you may become vegan! But that is a whole different blog post)

My Most Recent Box

May’s Butcher Box

As mentioned above, you can choose from a few different styles of boxes; I always get the custom box (the smaller of the two) because I am a control freak and want to know exactly what I am getting. This option also allows me to be able to pick a certain cut if I know I am wanting to make something specific the following month. Along with the custom box, I have a reoccurring add on of 2 lbs of salmon. This adds $25 to my total price.

My box typically arrives around the 30th of each month. So, although this is May’s “haul” it is the meat we will use through the month of June. In my most recent box I received:

  • 2lbs Alaskan Sockeye Salmon Filets
  • Boneless Pork Shoulder (about 3.75lbs)
  • 2 NY Strip Steaks (10oz ea)
  • Chuck Roast (about 2lbs)
  • 2lbs Ground Beef
  • 2lbs Ground Pork
  • 3lbs Chicken Drumsticks

Because this box doesn’t stretch the entire 30 days (give or take) between boxes, I do my best to make meals that allow the meat to be less of the star of this dish such as stir-fry or soups/stews. These types of meals can be really bulked up with vegetables or other items that will allow multiple meals from one dish. I also budget in bacon (Pederson’s Natural Farms) and sausage links (Applegate) to my monthly grocery bill which allows a few more meals to be made without using any of the meat from Butcher Box. One other suggestion to make the meat last, is try adding in more vegetarian meals per week/month. I can admit, when on a Whole30 or trying to eat a paleo diet, this can be a little tough; but it can be done!

Overall, I feel this is a great subscription and definitely worth the money. If you are at all interested, I do have a link that upon signing up, both you and I will receive the BBQ Bundle for free! This bundle includes: 2x NY strip steaks (10oz ea), St. Louis Pork Ribs (about 2.5lbs), and 2lbs of ground beef! This is a limited time offer, so don’t miss out! Please contact via contact page and I can email you the code.
